Rouge Cardinal Clematis

General Information

Rouge Cardinal Clematis is a great vine that could do well in many different landscape areas.  This plant can grow up to 12 feet tall.  Clematis falls into 3 different blooming categories, blooming on old wood, old and new wood and blooms on new wood.  This plant is in the blooming on new wood category.  It is most usually grown on a support of some form such as a trellis, fence, post or pergola.  It can be grown as a form of groundcover, over a stump or rock.  The foliage of this plant makes a great contrast for the beautiful flowers.  The leaves are moderate in size and are oval in shape, coming to a point at the end.  The leaves emerge in a medium green color that darkens as the growing season progresses.  The flowers bloom from mid summer to early autumn.  They are large, up to 6 inch wide, with 6 petals.  The center stamens are brownish-yellow with large reddish-pink petals.

Additional Information

Clematis ‘Rouge Cardinal’ grows to a height of 8 to 12 feet, with a spread of 3 to 6 feet.  It is recommended for climate zones 4 to 8.  It can grow in full sun to partial shade.  The roots do prefer to be shaded,  by a plant or some other means.  Rouge Cardinal grows best in fertile, well drained soils with moderate amounts of moisture.  It can be pruned to near the ground in the fall or early spring, to promote the new growth that these flowers bloom on.
