Description

Texas Scarlet Flowering Quince

General Information

Rich, scarlet red-orange flowers appear in early spring on the Texas Scarlet Flowering Quince. The glossy, mid-green foliage provides an attractive contrast to the brilliant blooms. It forms a low growing, spreading shrub. This is an excellent variety that is nearly thornless. The hard, yellow green fruits ripen to red in fall. The fruits are edible, but are very bitter when eaten directly from the bush. They can be used in jams and jellies. Excellent as a background shrub. Can be used in foundation plantings or shrub borders. Attractive low hedge. Good for planting on slopes or hillsides.

Additional Information

Chaenomeles speciosa ‘Texas Scarlet’ grows best in Full to Part Sun. It will grow 2-3′ tall with a spread of 3-4′. Plant in zones 5 to 8. Somewhat drought tolerant once established. Attracts butterflies.

Care & Shipping Notes

Easy to grow in average, well drained soil. Will tolerate a variety of soil types, including clay. Prefers loam. Blooms occur on old growth, so heavy pruning should be avoided. Any pruning to desired shape should be done in spring, immediately after flowering. The Texas Scarlet will spread by suckers. Remove the suckers to prevent spreading. Fireblight, scab, aphids, scale and mites may occur. Leaf spots and chlorosis may cause defoliation. Late spring frost may damage early buds. NOT AVAILABLE FOR SALE IN THESE US STATES AND TERRITORIES: AK, HI, GM, PR, VI. Also, WE NO LONGER SHIP TO CALIFORNIA due to Department of Ag restrictions on live plants.
