Purple Prairie Clover- Native
General Information
The central stems of the Purple Prairie Clover is slightly ridged and hairless. Multiple stems may extend from the base of older plants creating a bushy effect. The compound leaves alternate as they ascend the stem. Clusters of tiny, purple flowers circle the flower spike to form a feathery wreath and gradually work their way upward as the season progresses. This plant adds nitrogen to the soil and is important in restoration of prairies in the Midwest. This plant will be a wonderful addition to your wildflower garden or native planting. Plant in ditches or slopes to help control erosion. Attracts butterflies.
Additional Information
Dalea purpurea needs Full Sun to thrive. It grows 18-24″ tall with a spread of 12-18″. Plant in zones 3 to 8. The deep taproot of the Purple Prairie Clover increases its drought tolerance. It also makes it difficult to transplant once established. It may self seed with optimum growing conditions. The leaves are edible and provide food for a number of small animals. This plant was widely used by native Americans for tea and for medicinal purposes.
