General Information

Japanese Painted Fern is a nice perennial plant.  This plant has a generally lower growing, spreading and mounding habit.  Great in borders, woodland gardens or any shaded area that needs a burst of color.  The leaf fronds can grow up 20 inches long.  The small individual leaflets gray-green, with a silvery tint.  The stem and leaf veins have a reddish-purple color.  In the warmer months, the leaves transition to a brighter green color.

Athyrium niponicum ‘Pictum’ grows to a height of 12 to 18 inches, with a spread of 18 to 24 inches.  It is recommended for USDA climate zones 3 to 8.  Japanese Painted Fern does best in full to partial shade.  It does well with average amounts of moisture in a variety of soils.
