Description

Madonna Elderberry

General Information

Madonna Elderberry is an interesting plant that would look great in many different areas of your landscape.  In many locations, there are wild elderberries, but cultivar has a couple of different aspects that make it a good choice for a home landscape.  One thing that can be a benefit is that it grows slower than other elderberries making a great choice for a spot where a faster growing plant might overwhelm other plants.  The biggest plus for the Madonna Elderberry is it beautiful variegated foliage.  The leaves moderate in size and oval in shape.  The leaves emerge green with yellow margins, as the season continues, the margins turn to white, creating another great color contrast for the plant.  In the early summer, clusters of white flowers appear, turning into the elderberries that will mature late summer.  These elderberries cannot be eaten fresh, but used for jams, jellies or wine.

Additional Information

Sambucus nigra ‘Madonna’ grows to a height of 6 to 10 feet, with a similar spread.  It is recommended for climate zones 4 to 7.  It can grow in full sun to partial sun.  Madonna grows best in well drained soils with moderate amounts of moisture.  It can take some damage from powdery mildew, canker and leaf spots.  It can be good for the overall framework of the plant to give it a good trim every couple of years.
