Description

Indian Summer Crabapple

General Information

Indian Summer Crabapple is a beautiful tree that would look great in many different areas in your landscaping.  It is a smaller size tree with a great deal of ornamental value.  It grows to 20 feet tall and wide, so some care in placement must be taken.  It works quite well as the centerpiece of a yard and would create a great spring time show in a mass planting.  The Indian Summer grows in an upright fashion, with a rounded, broadly spreading canopy.  The leaves are oval in shape and up to 3 inches long.  These leaves emerge in the spring to a purple color, turning green for the rest of the growing season, before turning great shades of red and orange in the autumn.  Early in the spring, red flower buds open to beautiful five petaled dark pink and white colored flowers.  These flowers absolutely cover this tree in the springtime.  After the flowers, small fruits appear, maturing to a bright red color in the fall.

Additional Information

Malus ‘Indian Summer’ grows to a height of 15 to 20 feet, with a similar spread.  It is recommended for climate zones 4 to 8.  It likes to grow in full sunlight.  Indian Summer grows best in well drained soils with average to moderate amounts of moisture.  It is adaptable to different soil conditions.  It has good resistance to most of the normal crabapple diseases.
