General Information
Dense Blazing Star is a native of the Eastern United States. It is commonly found in moist low ground, meadows and marshes. Its showy, purple blooms are comprised of fluffy cluster of small deep purple flower heads. This feathery looks gives it the common name Gayfeather. These fluffy blooms grow on tall, upright stems that grow in clumps with narrow green, grass like leaves. The lovely, purple, summer blooms attract bees and butterflies.

Liatris spicata grows best in Full Sun. It will grow 2-4′ tall in cultivated gardens. In its native setting it may reach height of 6′. It has a spread of 9-18″. Plant this liatris in zones 3 to 9 for best results. Deer resistant. Drought tolerant.

Easy to grow in average, well drained soil. May tolerate poor soil, but prefers moist, rich soil. Will not tolerate wet soil in winter. There are no serious insect or disease problems.
