Description
Black Hickory
General Information
The Black Hickory tree is a great tree that could fit well in different areas of your landscape. This can be a larger size tree, growing up to 60 feet tall. This is a smaller tree than many other hickory trees. The relatively smaller size of this tree will give a few more opportunities to place the tree in different landscape circumstances. This tree would work very well in a park or any larger area that is dryer or has difficult soil conditions. The tree has a rounded oval crown, with thick foliage giving the tree a great shade canopy. The compound leaves form a large structure, with 7 leaflets. These leaflets are elliptical in shape and 3 to 5 inches in length, with serrated edges. They are dark green in color on top, with a lighter underside. In the spring, flowers form before giving way to nuts that ripen in the fall. The nuts are prized by many different forms of wildlife and are a favorite of people as well! The bark of this tree is dark brown and smooth in its youth, before becoming ridged and fissured as the tree matures. This tree is approximately 12 to 18 inches tall when shipped.
