Description

American Hazelnut

General Information

American Hazelnut is a fast growing, multi-stemed shrub that produces sweet flavorful nuts than can be eaten raw or roasted.  They also make a wonderful treat to attract squirrels and other wildlife. In the fall, the dark green leaves turn yellow-orange to deep red. In spring, male flowers appear as 2-3″ long yellow, brown catkins.  Female flowers are small, red catkins that are inconspicuous.  They turn into  1/2″ egg shaped nuts.  The American Hazelnut reproduces by suckers, and will grow into a thicket if the suckers are not removed. Plant in an area where it has plenty of room to grow.  This is a great shrub for naturalized gardens, open woodland areas, and shrub borders.
