Description

American Cranberry Viburnum

General Information

The American Cranberry Viburnum is a great shrub that could fit well in different areas of your landscape.  It can grow to be a larger size shrub, at 15 feet tall and wide.  It would be great to place in a shrub border, foundation planting or many other areas.  The American Cranberry has all-season interest with its many great aspects.  It grows in an upright, rounded manner.  In the spring, large flat-top clusters of small white flowers appear all over the shrub.  These flowers are followed by small berries that ripen to bright red in the late summer.  These berries persist into winter and are a valuable food source for the birds.  They also can be made into jellies or jams.  The leaves are moderate in size, and are quite reminiscent of maple leaves, with three pointed lobes.  The foliage is dark green in the growing season, turning beautiful shades of red to purple in the autumn.

Additional Information

Viburnum trilobum grows to a height of 10 to 15 feet, with a similar spread.  It is recommended for climate zones 2 to 8.  It can grow in full to partial sunlight.  It grows best in well drained soils with moderate amounts of moisture.  American Cranberry can be pruned in the late winter to early spring time.  It can take some damage from aphids, leaf spot and powdery mildew.
