Garden Center
We have an excellent selection of vegetables, fruits, flowers, herbs, foliage plants, and more. There are three greenhouses open for you to explore and to find the perfect plants for your home. In addition to containers of plants, we can put together beautiful containers of mixed plants, which are ready to display, on your deck or patio.
Maybe you don't need four or six of each flower, but you would like a variety of contrasting colors and shapes. Our ready-made container arrangements come in all sizes and shapes.
Do you like to "do it yourself?" Empty containers are also available for you to mix and match the plants of your choice. If you aren't sure of how much space each plant needs or which ones work well together, just ask. We'd be happy to offer advice and suggestions..
A destination place…Grimm's Gardens
Why would anyone ever drive 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 miles or more into the country to buy plants or to have your containers filled, or whatever prompts people to drive here
A Relaxing Getaway Right In Your Own Neighborhood.
Many years ago, we had an employee who came to us one day and said, “I have had various other jobs that I did not particularly enjoy. The clientele either were not happy or did not make me feel happy when I waited on them. I just can’t figure it out. Why are the people that come out here always happy and smiling?” Grimm’s Gardens has grown out of a hobby into a small business. We love what we do and it shows with happy customers! We invite you to come and see if you don't experience the same thing she was experiencing.
If you come out when business is a little slow, and are not in too big of a hurry, we will be glad to walk you through our backyard oasis. You will see the plants we are testing and trialing. We could even take a ride, in the golf cart, up to the arboretum and look at rare plants; be it a perennial, shrub, or tree. We have planted or even transplanted a time or two these plants just to find the right spot. Once it has found its proper spot, a plant becomes a happy plant. And happy plants can make happy people.
Not Your Ordinary Garden Center Plants...
Why do plants thrive at Grimm’s Gardens? We are not a wholesale operation and our focus is not on selling the top 10 plants easiest to make a dollar on. We do many things in our growing media to help make your plant thrive throughout its lifetime, whether that is one season, one year, or many years. Our farm background taught us that if we take care of the roots and grow the roots the way roots like to be grown, the top will do everything it is capable of doing. This is true whether it is a flower, a fruit, a pretty little shrub or a large shade tree. We may add to the growing mix slow release fertilizers, water holding polymers, or coconut fibers to enhance longevity, growth rate, drought tolerance, disease, and pest resistance. These are a few of the things that we do on a routine basis. Occasionally, we treat some plants with growth regulators to keep the plant compact and make it more manageable.
Continually improving...
We attend many schools, seminars and tour many trial gardens throughout the year. We've traveled to Louisville, Kentucky; Ames, Iowa; Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska; Wichita, Manhattan, and Kansas City, Kansas; Columbia, St Louis and Springfield, Missouri; Stillwater, Oklahoma; Chicago, Illinois and Portland, Oregon—all in search of the right information to grow a particular plant as successfully as possible.
We've traveled to eleven countries in Europe and met with salesmen. We’ve toured experimental fields where we have got to see firsthand some of the flowers of the future! We have seen how they sell flowers at their farmers markets and experienced the town crier announcing the coming of the local flower grower to sell his flowers. We toured an operation, similar to ours, in Devescar, Hungary and were most impressed as part of their greenhouse was eight feet under the surface of the ground around it. A single layer of plastic covering about 4 foot above the ground kept the heat in during the wintertime. They used the heat from the earth to grow plants in the winter. Touring the famous Kew Gardens and Abby Forde Gardens was an experience that we were awestruck by—truly an experience we would recommend if you ever get the opportunity.
What you will find at Grimm's Gardens...
We offer many old heirloom plants, be they popcorn geraniums or one of your grandmother’s favorite tomatoes, as well as some of the newest. Visiting a test site once for new geranium development, we saw a geranium of the future that the grower told us not to touch because this plant was worth $10,000.00. Hard to imagine, but that one plant was to become the mother of many, many future plants that would sell for a few dollars, but make the homeowners smile each time they saw their beautiful looking plant.
We offer many different herbs, vegetables, and a selection of annuals that cannot be found anywhere nearby. Many of our perennials we offer are in gallon size, so all you need to do is take it home, plant it, give it normal care, and it will reward you with all the benefits of a well established perennial. Many of these same perennials can be found in our quart size for a substantial savings, however; being they are smaller and have just come from the nursery, they really are still babies and therefore will take more care to become established.
We do not sell perennials in smaller sizes than quarts because pints or smaller have little or no chance of surviving in the landscape. They need a nursery (greenhouse) to get a little older and get acclimated to our weather swings. We also offer a very good selection of water plants—perennial and annual.
We carry fish to beautify your water garden. We try to keep a good selection of koi year round as they are also a very good fish for your aquarium in the house. Koi adapt their growth based upon the volume of water available to them. Also, they very rarely reproduce; therefore you don’t have to worry about what to do with all the extras. They are much more colorful than goldfish which can reproduce faster than mice or rabbits.
In our garden center, we do not carry a vast array of snake oils and hard to understand, how to use products. We try to keep only the products that we would use for diseases or pests of any kind. Often we will use a soft organic or organic-like product first. If the problem has gotten too severe or too far out of hand, we will help you find the right product or remedy to help you get it under control.
We carry organic and non organic plant and lawn products, fish food, trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, bird baths, liners to build your pond, blocks to build walls, pavers to make patios, weed barriers for underneath your plantings and bulk mulch and a wide variety of colors and sizes of bulk rock.
We may have just the right pot, container or birdbath you are looking for. We carry ceramic pots, clay pots, iron works, as well as our plastic grow pots and grow bags that we grow our trees in to keep the roots from circling.
Our full line of shrubs and trees will satisfy any need you have in your landscaping plan. We carry well over 200 different kinds of trees and just about every shrub that will grow and thrive here. We have tree stakes, tree ties for planting your tree, as well as tree wrap for protecting your tree from rabbit, deer or winter injury.
If you need help with a landscape design plan, we can help with that, as well as do the installation. As the years go by, we will also maintain it for you, even mow your lawn and remove your snow.
I guess you can see how having five sons can make a hobby turn into a small business!
