Do I need weed barrier under wood mulch?

  • No, only use weed barrier if you are laying rock.  Lay the fuzzy side down and slick side up.  Wood mulch slides and blows away on top of weed barrier.  It is best to just lay wood mulch directly on the bare ground.  It will deteriorate as organic matter and become a part of the soil, which benefits the plants.

Should I trim my roses in the fall?

  • If they are taller than 3' it is best to trim them down to 2-3' so snow doesn't break them over.  It is best to trim them short (8") in the spring about April 1st.  This cleans up the black and diseased canes from the winter and also stimulates them to grow.

When should I trim my ornamental grasses?

  • Leave them through the winter for interest.  They are very pretty when water freezes on them and when the sun shines on them and they sparkle!  Only trim them in the fall if they are near a heat source such as a furnace exhaust.  Trim them to the ground in March so the sun can get to the crown of the plant and they will green up faster.

How often & How much should I water my plants?

  • This is one of the best question new plants owners can ask, as it shows they want to keep their plants alive & doing well. I don't know of any real good easy answer, that is easy!!!  We need to think about our ownselfs a little bit here & understand that on a cloudy cool rainy day in the spring or fall we will not need to stop to get a drink of water as often as we will on a long hot windy sunny,  day in July or August.  Even in the winter we need to replenish ourselves with a drink of water. If the plants could talk to us it would be easy if we were there to listen.  Sometime they do tell us things about how they feel. But that wilted look could be saying I am Dry or it could also mean I'm too WET!  There is no better way to tell than to dig a little bit into the ground close to the plant & feel the soil.  The more often you do this the sooner you will get a understanding how to keep your plants growing at the peak genetic ability. If the soil is shiny wet looking, the plant is getting to much water. It is easier to tell if the soil is to dry, it's just plain dry. Plants  can handle short times of both extremes  but not for long periods.

What kind of fertilizer do my plants need?

  • Almost all plants will do better with some nitrogen fertilizer than without. Most all fertilizers are labeled N-P-K   N= nitrogen, P=phosphors, K=potash. A normal label could read 12-12-12 each number being the same amounts of each type of fertilizer. The number 12 means, pounds of real fertilizer in 100 lbs. of product. That is the same if it is dry or liquid.  As a general rule plants that flower a lot or will set seed/ fruit or reproduce by spreading  will also need extra phosphors, most all of our soil in this part of the Midwest needs these 2 ingredients, most all of our soils have enough potash. The minor nutrients are supplied in very small amounts which is usually sufficient.

  • All of these types of fertilizers are much more important if you are going to keep your plants in a container with potting soil. Potting soil is usually much better for our plants in containers than garden soil because it drains more rapidly than garden soil, Just be sure your container has a good size hole in it for drainage. Also when it is new ,it is sterile & does not have any bugs or dezies so it needs to be replaced at least after a season of poor plant performence. Small container repot every year, some of the biggest containers maybe only replace soil as deep as the roots grew.  House plants will do better with a low salt type of fertilizer such as one of the naturals we carry.

What is the difference between "Clay Pavers & Concrete Pavers"?

  • Clay pavers are made with real clay that is mixed, extruded and baked in a kiln at very high temperatures and concrete pavers are made with a special blend of concrete and coloring that is compacted at very high pressures in a special machine.

Which type of paver is better?

  • There is very little difference between pavers in general. The important difference is the maker of the pavers. Paving materials can vary from one manufacturer to next. The qualities that make a paver perfect are its compressive strength, water absorption rate and abrasion index.

What happens if I have to do a repair job below the paving? Does it leave an unsightly patch mark?

  • No, that is one of the long term benefits to installing Flexible paving. Because all interlocking paving is flexible it can also resist cracking. This is especially beneficial in California which has very expansive soils.

What does "Interlocking Paving" mean?

  • Interlocking paving is a misleading term. What actually constitutes interlocking is really a dynamic function containing three different components. They are "rotational interlock" (resistance to tipping) "horizontal interlock" (resistance to spreading) "vertical interlock (resistance to sinking)". So, that means for lasting quality you need good containment, good sub base and proper paver thickness. Thicker pavers for driveways thinner pavers for patios.

After you're done Paving the work surfaces should I Seal It?

  • Yes, it protects it from leaky cars that might leave oil stains and it stays cleaner for much longer if you seal it right away before it has a chance to get stained. Remember when it's sealed it only takes a hose to clean it off. We use breathable type sealers that protect against just about anything.
